Cat Adoption Application
Getting Started
Please make sure the cat you wish to adopt is still available and that you know the adoption fee for that cat, by going to and refreshing the Available Dogs and Cats page.
Please review the Adoption Guidelines before proceeding further.
Adoption Guidelines
-
Prior to adoption, all household members should be present to meet the prospective new cat.
-
You must be at least 21 years of age to adopt.
-
We advise (as per Humane Society recommendation) that families with children under 10 years of age do not adopt kittens under 6 months old. Young kittens require careful handling and can easily be harmed accidentally .
-
We suggest that our kittens be adopted in pairs. If you’re interested in adopting one kitten (under 4 months old), it’s best to have a young, playful, friendly cat or someone in the family at home most of the day.
-
We advise that all of our adopted cats and kittens be indoor only. Indoor cats live longer and healthier, avoiding the dangers of disease and predators outdoors. At times, we’ll have cats that may be available for adoption as indoor/outdoor cats, based on their history and behavior.
-
Declawing is cruel and unnecessary and we advocate against declawing cats. At times, we will have previously declawed cats available for adoption.
-
To reduce pet overpopulation, we advocate that all animals living as pets be spayed or neutered. Spark will always spay or neuter our rescues prior to adoption if there are special circumstances they must be returned for altering. The cost for the surgery is included in the adoption fee.
Please answer the preliminary questions below, and only hit the "Submit" button if prompted. You will then be directed to the Adoption Application form.
Once your application is submitted, all information provided will be carefully reviewed and verified, and you will be contacted only if it is determined that you are a good fit for the cat you are interested in adopting. Please note that due to the high volume of applications this process may take several days, and your patience and understanding is appreciated.
Things to Know before Submitting an Adoption Application:
- As part of the application process you will be asked to provide proof of home ownership by downloading a copy of your property tax statement or if you rent your home, you will be asked to download a copy of your lease agreement showing that you have permission to have a cat. Please be prepared to submit an electronic file (15 MB max).
- You are also encouraged to submit additional documentation as part of your application, such as photos of yourself/family with current or past pets, records of past veterinary services and other pet-related expenditures, references from pet-professional, etc.
- Due to the large number of applications submitted and the time it takes to review and verify all information provided, a one-time $10 Adoption Application Fee in the form of a donation to Spark Rescue (by PayPal or credit card), will be requested following the preliminary Adoption Application questions.
- Submittal and/or approval of an Application does not guarantee adoption.
Please note that in order to be eligible to adopt a cat from Spark Rescue:
- You must live between the City of Monterey and the City of Ventura.
- You must be 21 years of age or older.
